Fabulous Nicholas Abbey
Selkirk052, 21-09-2022
After 37 years away, we are back in Barbados.
We visited the abbey again and it was an amazing transformation. The Great House is much the same- built in the 1700's but the distillery and cafe were beautifully done. The cafe had excellent food and was reasonably priced. We sat by a lush green forest and listened to a steel band playing. Rum was delicious and staff terrific.
Didn't ride the train but that too looked interesting.
Barbados gem

Visited house and learnt about some really interesting history and how rum is made. Visited the bottling and distillery. The grounds are beautiful. Tasted different rums with Simon who is part of the family who own and run the property. He was so friendly and knowledgeable and made us feel really welcome. There is also a great shop and cafe. Would definitely return when back in Barbados.
Not to be missed experience with so much variety for all the family.

This is a must....it’s several treats at one attraction for all. We had an excellent guided tour of house and fascinating history..learnt so much. We then had a great ridge on the old steam train with lovely views of the island. Then visit to the rum distillery & rum tasting which was very pleasant and again interesting..We topped it off with a nice lunch in restaurant with live background Bahamas music which was perfect for an enjoyable lunch with the occasional chat with owners of this not to be missed experience
A must visit place!

Recommended by a friend, we visited this fabulous place and were blown away! It is a must see for any visitor to the island. We did the combo tour of the heritage railway and house/distillery tour.
The train journey was very informative thanks to the professional guides on board and there are some fabulous views. It was a nice touch at the end of the line to get the “volunteers” involved to help turn the train with the engineer!
The house and distillery tour was again run by a very knowledgeable guide and it was very interesting to learn about the history of the island, the house and the plantation.
Of course there was a “sell” at the end by Simon (owner) after the rum tasting but it was one of the best! Look him up… a very interesting and Charming man.
Fun, informative and impeccably put together!

Fun, informative and impressively put together.

We visited the area not expecting to be wowed, but what a fantastic display of interactive history.

The railway has been so tastefully restored and offers tremendous reviews. The train ‘inspectors’/guides were so friendly to us and we were all laughing, enjoying their company.

The house itself remains as it was and offers a glimpse into the history of its owners and Barbados more broadly. The short video explaining the history of the place is a must and includes some fascinating footage of the old harbour at Bridgetown and on the estate.

The rum distillery is small and the tour feels homely. Everything on this part of the tour is of incredibly high quality and the tasting generous. I bought a bottle of rum which is expensive, but not excessively so and justifies the small and bespoke nature of the site.

Must visit. You will not be disappointed.
Lovely experience!

Really enjoyed learning about the history of the plantation and the great house! Tasted some lovely rum. Beautiful scenery and setting, didn't go on the train but enjoyed seeing it.
Incredible, must do experience

Amazing experience ! We went in the train and the great house and rum tour. Both were really interesting and good fun! When meeting Simon, the owner, the experience was even better with his great humour and passion for rum. The place and Simon are perfect and a must to experience on the island
Something to do

Nice tour if you are interested in learning more about old homes and their history. Great photo opportunities. Rum tasting afterwards was just ok, not much tasting happening (2 types with very very little rum shot)
A Worthy Barbados Excursion

Really we loved our visit to St Nicholas Abbey on a lovely rainy Sunday in Barbados. We visited the great house and its grounds and gardens, which are beautiful. We were welcomed by Sean, a friendly guide, as we passed a massive, 200 year old mahogany tree. Sean led us down a cobblestone walk to the gate of the house, a timepiece from the 18th century. The staff offered a tour, but weren't at all pushy and allowed us to wander the ground floor at our leisure. The small gift shop is very nice, and fine rum is made and sold on the premises. Just outside the property is a spectacular vista view of the "Scottish" Atlantic coast. We enjoyed our time at St Nicholas Abbey very much.
Fabulous House. Distillery Tour Could Be Better.
filmg, 05-10-2022
The house itself is impressive, and well worth the trip. You only see a few rooms, but they are well presented. You get to look inside the small distillery, but cannot go inside. (Maybe it’s different when they are crushing cane.) The pleasant guide did not know much about rum distilling. Our tours of distilleries in the French Caribbean were better. You get to taste 3 rums, and (of course) buy bottles of rum. There is also a modest cafe. In all, a nice spot, but a stronger distillery tour would be nice.
Rum distillery and steam train ride
charlesbrox, 17-09-2022
Visited this attraction as seen previously on Jane McDonald television travelogue. It was 80 Barbados dollars each to enter both house and train ride round plantation. We did steam train ride first which was very enjoyable and at top the views from Cherry Tree Hill were spectacular even though it was slightly obscured due to the weather.

The distillery tour was quite short and we didn’t see much of the process at all. We were then taken to house and given a tour of the history of the property. The age of some of the artefacts and the distance they had travelled was amazing. We then went into the shop and after a rum tasting (only one very small glass) we bought a bottle of rum. This was 65 Barbados dollars and we were able to have it engraved by a staff member to commemorate our sons wedding at Sandals.the previous Tuesday.

After the tour whilst waiting for taxi we had a drink in the cafe served by a surly waiter who looked like he was doing me a massive favour by binging a couple of drinks.

All in all it was an interesting experience but I think it was expensive and the cafe experience was a negative. Factor in taxi from west coast (we were at Tamarind in Paynes Bay) 140 Barbados dollars for round trip made it quite an expensive day
Disappointing

We visited yesterday. House is lovely, only see 3 rooms of it though.
The rum tasting was disappointing, the man doing the presentation wasn’t the best and lost everyone’s attention very quickly. You only get one tiny tot of rum too.
The train ride wasn’t worth bothering with. It last 40 mins but at least 30 mins is stopping to turn round and then a very long talk about the history of it after we’d visited the stalls with gifts.
Best part about the whole trip was an 18 minute film made in 1940’s of the previous owners grandfathers experience when he owned it.
